Contest #4: Winner Winner Turkey Dinner!

I am the opposite of a hoarder.

I fear the accumulation of “stuff.”

I traveled from Borneo to Lombok over a stretch of 2 months with nothing but this backpack.

I lived in Washington, DC for 3 years before I bought a bed. I preferred hand-me-down futons and the yoga mat-mattresses to the permanency that comes with possessions too big for a backpack. It’s that same fear of possession accumulation that keeps me in an exclusive relationship with my one and only bike, ChiTo.

So, when I received this HOT pair of polarized TYR goggles in my SWAG bag at Kona, I wanted to share them with someone who didn’t already have a pair!

And the winner of the TYR Google contest is:

Maria, of the clever and instructive Water Blogged Triathlete, pictured below (in blue).

When I contacted Maria with the good news, she replied “I only have one pair for outdoor use and they’ve seen better days.” So happy to hear that my aversion to hoarding means that someone “in need” will put these goggles to good use!

Though Maria was chosen at random, her submission for the caption contest was among my favorites:

As they took their marks, Mary wondered, “Am I supposed to make a bee line or a bee hive for it?”

Congratulations, Maria!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Contest #4: TYR Goggle Treat

Saving the Roomies from Sandy

Two weeks after my season ended on a little island in the Pacific, I was ready to ease back into my training. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy forced house arrest.

Although my cabin fever ran high approaching the 48th hour, I was able to catch up on some reading I had neglected during triathlon season.

But this morning, as the city returned to work, I had to remind myself that it was indeed Wednesday, not Monday.

As I drove to the office, I had the distinct feeling that I had forgotten something. My computer? No. My wallet? No. My cell phone? For once, I had that too. But no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t quit that feeling.

When I pushed open the office door to a room full of strategy consultants in bright tights, it dawned on me what I had forgotten: a HALLOWEEN BLOG GIVEAWAY!

My colleagues’ tights reminded me of the bright pair of TYR Custom goggles from my Kona SWAG bag.

In addition to cracked out on color, these goggles feature polarized lenses, a super suave fit, and a case that doubles as a lens cleaner.

Definitely a treat!

And the prize for next month’s contest winner!

Contest #3: Muscle Milk versus The Bonk

This is how I feel as I start to bonk. Short of the blond ringlets and white bows, it’s also how I look. Listless. Exhausted. Uninterested in food.

Perhaps the only time I am uninterested in food.

Endurance athletes are generally acquainted with the post-workout bonk. As a marathoner, I’d crank out a 16-mile training run, take a shower, and then slip into a heavy fog. Sometimes I’d just crawl back into bed and sleep. Hard.

Older and wiser, I now realize that haze was actually a “bonk.”

Enter Muscle Milk.

Guided by Chrissie Wellington’s advice, I started drinking Muscle Milk after endurance efforts lasting longer than two hours. It’s not that Muscle Milk is the only way to avoid a post-endurance bonk, it’s just that it is the tastiest, most convenient way I have found.

Muscle Milk is often the only thing my stomach can handle after a long, hard race. I give Muscle Milk props for helping me recover after Syracuse 70.3, when a couple hours after that 4:50 PR effort, I had to drive back home. For 7 hours. Alone.

This month, the Muscle Milk crew will pay two of my blog subscribers a visit and hook them up each with a case of Muscle Milk!

Announcing the winners:

1. Fredrik Nyman

2. Donna Sumption

We can’t wait to hear how you and Muscle Milk do owning your bonk!

I do not endorse smoking. I do endorse beating your bonk into submission.

Contest #2: We Go Together

If agave nectar and cocoa had a theme song, it would go something like this:

“We go together like
rama lama lama
ke ding a de dinga a dong…

That’s the way it should be-eeeee….Wha oooh yeah!”

Like Danny, Sandy and the rest of the Grease gang, agave nectar and cocoa just go together. So well, in fact, that Chocolate #9 combines them into one energy gel.

Two lucky contest winners get to give this delicious combination a try.

Announcing the winners of this month’s blog-alicious giveaway, nine packets of Chocolate #9:

Winner 1: He showed promise in athletics when, at age 16, he captured the ping pong championship title at Schlarman High School in Danville, IL. He later wowed audiences of ladies as he sang bass in a barbershop quartet. And while he is no stranger to the triathlon podium, Northern Virginia knows him best for his prized pie-making skills.

Congratulations, Mr. Bob Young!

Winner 2: Her transition from steering through the water as her crew team’s coxswain to swimming through the water in triathlon was not easy. In her first triathlon sprint, she was last out of the water. Today, this Taipei-born polyglot will impress you with her swim-bike-run skills. Oh, and her tricycle skills. On two wheels, she’s hot. On three, she’s unstoppable!

Congratulations, Ms. Janet Chow!

The Chocolate Contest

It’s about time for another blog-a-licious give-away!

Introducing the…

CHOCOLATE CONTEST!

TWO lucky winners will each score NINE (9!!) packets each of Kona 2012 qualifier Andy Lipscomb’s favorite energy gel, Chocolate #9 (pronounced “Choc-o-let Num-ber 9”).

To be eligible to win, simply become an email subscriber to this blog. Provide your email address in the upper right column of this page where it says “Provide ChiTo with Your Email Address…” Then click “Follow ChiTo.”

So, What’s so great about Chocolate #9?

First and foremost, it tastes good enough to drizzle on your ice cream sundae.

Even better, Chocolate #9 is simple, as life should be 🙂 Each packet contains just two ingredients: organic agave nectar and cocoa.

Most importantly, agave nectar provides slow burning carbs. While I am not diabetic, I know the importance of avoiding a dramatic spike in blood sugar during competition, as a crash soon follows. Because it is sweetened with the slow burning carbs unique to agave nectar, Chocolate #9 is certified low glycemic, the only such energy gel I’ve ever encountered.

Winners will be notified on May 30th, the birthday of a lady as sweet as agave nectar: my mom!

Our last contest winner, NOELLE BANNISTER, scored a pair of ZENSAH arm sleeves in the color of her choice. Purple, of course.

Contest #1: Arm Sleeve-Tastic

The compression company Zensah is named after the Italian word senza, meaning “without.” Zensah envisions athletes without limits. I envision athletes without bulky layers of clothing staying warm on a cold race day.

A huge thank you to Zensah for outfitting ChiTo’s first contest winner, NOELLE BANNISTER, with fantastic arm sleeves.

Congratulations NOELLE!

Pictures to follow in a future post.
